  • BulkResponse vs Smartlead: which one fits how you actually send?

    Comparison

    BulkResponse vs Smartlead

Smartlead is built for cold outbound from a stack of rotating mailboxes. BulkResponse is built for sending real volume to your own list on dedicated IPs. Here’s the honest breakdown: main features side by side, real mailbox pricing pulled from inside Smartlead’s trial, and the cases where each one wins.

    Since 2008BulkResponse, 10,000+ senders
    1M/dayper server on dedicated IPs
    Unlimitedcontacts on every plan
    $3/mailboxadd-on, domain included

Both send email at scale. They’re built for two different jobs. Smartlead connects a stack of mailboxes, warms them, and drips cold email to purchased or scraped B2B prospect lists, with a lead database and AI agents on top. BulkResponse takes a list you already own (50k, 200k, sometimes a few million) and sends to it on dedicated, pre-warmed IPs built to move real volume without getting throttled.

Which one is right for you

Go with BulkResponse. You send offers, newsletters, or affiliate mail at volume, and you’ve been throttled, paused, or banned by a “modern” ESP for mailing people who asked to hear from you. You want dedicated pre-warmed IPs, unlimited contacts, single opt-in, and a human on support. That’s the exact job BulkResponse was built for.
Smartlead is a strong fit. Your job is cold outreach to prospects who’ve never heard of you, you run an agency juggling many client campaigns, and you want a built-in lead database, AI reply agents, and a dialer in one login. BulkResponse can send cold too, but a cold-outbound agency OS is Smartlead’s lane.

    Main features, side by side

I signed up for Smartlead’s trial and mapped its actual toolset against BulkResponse’s. Here’s what each platform is really made of.

    What you actually pay

Smartlead charges a subscription, then stacks costs on top: third-party mailboxes, lead credits billed separately, and a dedicated-server add-on. BulkResponse prices by how many emails you send a month, with dedicated IPs and a domain included in every sending plan, unlimited contact storage, and no per-credit meter. Pre-warmed mailboxes are an optional $3 add-on.

Pre-warmed mailboxes: what they actually cost

Both platforms sell pre-warmed mailboxes so you can start without setting up domains yourself. I checked Smartlead’s inside the trial, and the pricing works differently than the headline suggests.

    Smartlead
    Subscription from ~$39/mo
Third-party mailboxes: $45 up front for 3 warmed inboxes + domain
    Lead credits billed separately

Three charges, three vendors, domain always extra.

    BulkResponse
Plan includes server, dedicated IPs, and a domain

Mailboxes: optional $3 add-on, domain included, no separate credits.

    BulkResponseSmartlead (via vendors)
    Cost per mailbox$3/month add-on, domain included$3.99 to $9/month
DomainIncluded, no separate charge$13 to $19/year, billed separately

Daily send per mailboxUp to 2,000Depends on ESP and vendor
Lead creditsNot metered, unlimited contactsBilled separately, on top
Mailbox login accessYesVaries, some vendors give none

Inside Smartlead’s own setup flow, a ready-made bundle is $45 up front for 3 warmed mailboxes on one domain ($9 a mailbox a month plus $18 a year for the domain), and the do-it-yourself vendor route still runs $3.99 to $5 a mailbox plus $13 to $19 a domain a year. The domain is always billed separately, some vendors give you no login access to the mailboxes, and all of it sits on top of your subscription and your separate lead credits. BulkResponse includes the dedicated IPs and a domain in the plan and runs everything on its own servers. Pre-warmed mailboxes are a $3 add-on with the domain included, on the Small Business and High Volume plans. No separate domain charge, no lead credits.

Why deliverability comes down to infrastructure

Inbox placement is decided mostly by IP reputation, authentication, and how you send, long before your copy is read. That’s the whole reason dedicated, pre-warmed IPs matter more than another subject-line tweak. We broke this down with real numbers in why your cold emails bounce at enterprise companies, including how a blended “95% delivered” dashboard can hide a 52% bounce at Mimecast. Once you’re landing consistently, the next fight is the Primary tab instead of Promotions, which is what Gmail won’t tell you about inbox placement.

Where Smartlead wins. If your job is cold outbound, Smartlead is purpose-built for it. It’s the better pick when you need a 300M-contact database, AI agents routing replies across email, LinkedIn, and calling, and one inbox to manage dozens of client campaigns. BulkResponse isn’t trying to be a cold-outbound agency operating system.

    Frequently asked questions

Is BulkResponse a cold email tool like Smartlead?

BulkResponse can send cold outreach (single opt-in is allowed, and you can run 20 SMTP injectors or connect your own mailboxes), but its core is high-volume sending to a list you already own. Smartlead is purpose-built for cold prospecting to lists you don’t.

Does BulkResponse charge separately for domains or mailboxes?

The plan includes the server, dedicated IPs, and a domain, with no separate domain charge. Pre-warmed mailboxes are an optional $3-a-month add-on (up to 2,000 sends a day each) on the Small Business and High Volume plans, not on SMTP Relay. Smartlead resells mailboxes through third-party vendors and bills the domain separately.

    Does BulkResponse cap my contacts?

No. Contacts are unlimited on every plan. There’s no lead-credit meter draining as your list grows.

    How does deliverability compare?

BulkResponse runs dedicated, pre-warmed IPs monitored 24/7, the layer that actually decides placement. Enterprise inboxes are their own challenge: a security gateway can accept your mail, log it as delivered, then quietly quarantine it. We covered that in this breakdown.

Can I keep and move my own list?

Yes. Your list is yours, exportable, not locked inside a dashboard.
